Pathways School Curriculum Vision
A curriculum to develop confidence, independence and healthy relationships.
Geography at Pathways School
At Pathways School, we recognise that through the development of strong geographical knowledge and by fostering intellectual curiosity about the world children will build the foundations of understanding the world they live in, the people that reside within it, the places that exist and landscape and environments. Students will develop a firm understanding of what geography is and how to become critical geographers; fostering active citizens for when they go out into the world.
As Students progress into KS3, their growing knowledge about the world should deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
The curriculum has been designed based on a thematic approach, where knowledge is acquired, developed over time, and applied via understanding through independent practice. All units include examples of real-life places to secure the concepts, issues and content being delivered throughout. There are also detailed case study experiences at the end of units which allow pupils to apply their knowledge and understanding with place meaning, giving them a place specific view of geography. In- depth place studies conclude a series of units, allowing pupils to apply their geographical knowledge, understanding, and skills to continents or regions of the world including Africa, The Middle East, and Russia. Throughout the units there are opportunities for pupils to make geographical decisions, assess and evaluate different geographical issues and to think like geographers.
Our high expectations and aspirations
All lessons are delivered using an “I do, we do, you do” lesson structure which allows us to:
-
Be explicit with the knowledge that we choose to teach
-
Ensure that all of our lessons support the delivery of the intended curriculum
-
By the end of KS2, Students will be confident in using subject specific language to read and write about Geographic topics. Students will have the tools to support the human and physical word around them.
By the end of KS3, students will confidently analyse and evaluate relevant real world case studies from both physical and human geography.
